Momordica charantia, commonly known as bitter melon, is a green, warty fruit native to tropical regions of Asia and Africa. A member of the squash family, it is known for its distinctly bitter flavor and has long been used in Asian cuisine and traditional herbal practices.
Bitter melon can be enjoyed in stir-fries, curries, soups, pickles, and teas. The dried fruit can also be rehydrated for culinary use or steeped as an herbal tea. Traditionally used in Ayurveda and Chinese herbal practices, bitter melon is also valued for its ability to help maintain already healthy blood sugar levels.* Common names include bitter gourd, balsam pear, African cucumber, and karavellaka.
