Linden Flowers with Bracts
History & Information
Linden trees (Tilia sp.), also known as lime trees or basswood, grace both Europe and North America with their beauty and fragrance. Growing up to 130 feet tall, they burst into bloom from late spring to early summer, producing clusters of delicate yellow-white flowers that can perfume entire neighborhoods and draw swarms of happy pollinators.
Each cluster is protected by a feathery, elongated bract that aids in seed dispersal and is harvested along with the flowers and buds. The blossoms and leaves together create a full herbal profile, commonly steeped as soothing linden tea, tinctured, or blended into herbal infusions.
Linden’s sweet, slightly citrus aroma has been cherished for centuries, lending itself to perfumes, gentle wellness teas, and calming skincare creations. In folklore, the linden tree holds a sacred place: Celts believed that sitting beneath it could cure epilepsy; in Roman and German tradition, it was the “tree of lovers”; and in Polish tales, its wood offered protection from lightning and the evil eye.
Today, Linden Flowers remain a timeless favorite; an aromatic, heart-shaped symbol of peace, love, and relaxation for mind, body, and spirit.
